Read on!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The minimum wage is the lowest <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Remuneration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remuneration<\/a> an employer can pay any employee. In Hungary it is defined on a monthly basis, and it is adjusted regularly (at least every year) by the government to ensure it remains a living wage. There are in fact two types of minimum wage, depending on the qualifications required for the position:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Minimum wage <\/strong>can be paid to employees whose job does not require any specific skills or a secondary education. This has been increased by 16% from HUF 200,000 gross to HUF 232,000 gross as of 1 January 2023.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Guaranteed minimum salary<\/strong> must be paid to employees whose job needs at least a secondary education or a high school diploma. This has been increased by 14% from HUF 260,000 gross to HUF 292,400 gross as of 1 January 2023.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have employees who receive either the minimum wage or the guaranteed minimum salary, you must increase their salaries to meet the required minimum, and modify their labor contracts accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your costs will increase not only by the raise itself, but also by the payroll taxes you must pay as an employer (more on this below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do you take salary as a managing director? Are you paying minimum contributions? Read on!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hungarian minimum wage has increased to HUF 232,000, and the guaranteed minimum salary to HUF 292,400 as of 1 January 2023. The managing director\u2019s salary or the base of the minimum contributions also follow this increase. <a href=\"https:\/\/helpers.hu\/ar\/%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%85%d8%ad%d8%a7%d8%b3%d8%a8%d8%a9-%d9%88%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%85%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%8a%d8%a9\/taxes-on-dividend-and-dividend-advance-payments-in-hungary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read more here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Salary calculation in 2023<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Hungary, the employer and the employee always <strong>agree on the gross salary<\/strong>, and this is what is included in the labor contract. When minimum wages are discussed, that also means the gross salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Employees must pay taxes<\/strong> and contributions from the gross salary, but various tax exemptions may apply based on age and marital status. As a result, the net salary of an employee may change even if the gross salary remains the same. The taxes to be paid by the employee are <strong>in fact calculated by the employer who also forwards them to the Tax Authority<\/strong>, so the employees receive only their net salaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the <strong>employer must pay a tax for employing someone<\/strong>. This is calculated on top of the gross salary of the employee, and must be paid to the Tax Authority monthly, together with the employee\u2019s taxes. The sum of the gross salary and the employer\u2019s taxes is what a given employee costs your company in a given month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the below comparison table, you can see the Hungarian payroll taxes in 2023 for the minimum wage, the guaranteed minimum salary, and another amount. In contrast, <strong>payroll taxes in 2023 remain the same<\/strong>, so the payroll costs at your Hungarian company will only change in proportion to the raise you give your employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No more pockets on the SZ\u00c9P Card<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The SZ\u00c9P Card is one of the <strong>most popular<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/helpers.hu\/ar\/%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%85%d8%ad%d8%a7%d8%b3%d8%a8%d8%a9-%d9%88%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%85%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%8a%d8%a9\/fringe-benefits-in-hungary-cafeteria-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fringe benefits<\/a> in Hungary. It is a type of <strong>\u201cnon-salary compensation\u201d<\/strong> that can be spent on <strong>hot meals<\/strong>, <strong>accommodation<\/strong> when traveling, and various <strong>leisure activities<\/strong> such as visiting museums or theaters. It lets employers complement the salaries of their employees under reduced tax while giving a boost to targeted sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its creation, the SZ\u00c9P Card had three \u201cpockets\u201d, or sub-accounts dedicated to each supported activity. Over the <a href=\"https:\/\/helpers.hu\/ar\/%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%85%d8%ad%d8%a7%d8%b3%d8%a8%d8%a9-%d9%88%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%85%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%8a%d8%a9\/szep-card-in-hungary-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">last few years<\/a>, these pockets were sometimes \u201cturned off\u201d, or made interchangeable to make sure all sums can be used up, boosting domestic tourism.
