The night before, on New Year\u2019s Eve, or Szilveszter in Hungarian, most people party, drink champagne and shoot fireworks. New Year\u2019s Day is usually quiet, with some people attending mass or a classical concert \u2013 or tending their hang-over.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Revolutions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two bank holidays in Hungary marking famous revolutions. The <strong>15<sup>th<\/sup> of March<\/strong> commemorates the <a href=\"https:\/\/hungariancitizenship.eu\/15-march-in-hungary-an-important-national-holiday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">uprising of 1848-49<\/a> against the Habsburg rule. On the <strong>23<sup>rd<\/sup> of October<\/strong>, we remember <a href=\"https:\/\/hungariancitizenship.eu\/the-significance-of-october-23-in-hungary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the revolution of 1956<\/a> against communist oppression. These two days mostly see solemn celebratory gatherings, as well as some political demonstrations, in the center of Budapest.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Labor Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>1<sup>st<\/sup> of May is <a href=\"https:\/\/hungariancitizenship.eu\/mayday-or-labor-day-what-is-celebrated-on-1-may-in-hungary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Labor Day<\/a><\/strong>, also laced with some peaceful political protests. With spring being in full swing, most people take to parks to have picnics, with some districts setting up a funfair for the kids.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Celebrating the harvest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hungariancitizenship.eu\/what-do-we-celebrate-on-20-august-in-hungary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20<sup>th<\/sup> of August<\/a><\/strong> commemorates <strong>the first king of Hungary, St. Stephen<\/strong>. He\u00a0converted the nation to Christianity in the 11th century and forged the first Hungarian state. This day also sees the people celebrating the end of the harvest. <strong>The first bread made from newly harvested grain<\/strong> is\u00a0of particular significance. In recent years, a competition for the <strong>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/hungariancitizenship.eu\/the-cake-of-hungary-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cake of the country<\/a>\u201d<\/strong> has been started. The winning cake is\u00a0available in most confectionary shops for a few weeks around the 20<sup>th<\/sup> of August. Each year, thousands of people gather in downtown Budapest on the banks of the Danube to watch the celebratory <strong>fireworks<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other holidays in Hungary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The above list contains only the secular bank holidays in Hungary.
