Whenever you are asked for a photo ID (\u201c<strong>f\u00e9nyk\u00e9pes igazolv\u00e1ny<\/strong>\u201d or \u201c<strong>arck\u00e9pes igazolv\u00e1ny<\/strong>\u201d), one of the following things are meant:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>ID card<\/strong> (issued in Hungary, the EEA, or Switzerland)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Passport <\/strong>(issued anywhere in the world)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Driver\u2019s license<\/strong> (issued in Hungary)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Hungary is an <strong>EU member state, ID cards <\/strong>issued in any other EEA member state are generally accepted for every purpose. <strong>Passports issued worldwide<\/strong> are similarly acceptable. The use of <strong>driver\u2019s licenses<\/strong> issued outside of Hungary is limited: they may be accepted for driving or renting a car, but not for identification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are a Hungarian resident, your <strong>residence permit<\/strong> might also be acceptable for identification, although that is only valid together with your passport, which you are supposed to carry around anyway. Students also regularly have a <strong>student ID<\/strong> that has their photo printed on it, but that is usually requested and accepted only in situations where their student status is relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Please note: People living in Hungary must also carry verification of their Hungarian address (an <strong>accommodation slip or an address card<\/strong>). However, that document doesn\u2019t usually have a photo of the owner.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional documents<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, you might have additional documents that have a likeness of your face. Whether they are accepted for age and identity verification, however, will be at the discretion of each organization. Such documents might include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Photo ID for a business registration (e.g. a taxi driver license)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Travel pass ID (e.g. until a few years back, you needed such an ID issued by the Budapest Public Transport company if you wanted a monthly pass)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Photo ID from your workplace<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ID created for any other non-governmental organization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Nowadays the <a href=\"https:\/\/helpers.hu\/ar\/%d8%aa%d8%b5%d8%b1%d9%8a%d8%ad-%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%a5%d9%82%d8%a7%d9%85%d8%a9\/dap-app-new-gateway-to-electronic-administration-hungary-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">D\u00c1P app<\/a> also offers digital ID and address card among its functions, available to those eligible for a Hungarian ID card. However, <strong>D\u00c1P is only accepted by the police<\/strong>. If you want to verify your data in front of any other party, you will need to present your physical documents. <strong>Regarding the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/helpers.hu\/ar\/%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%85%d9%88%d8%a7%d8%b7%d9%86%d8%a9-%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%85%d8%ac%d8%b1%d9%8a%d8%a9\/general-elections-in-hungary-in-2026-can-you-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>upcoming general elections<\/strong><\/a><strong>, the voter registration notices specifically state that the D\u00c1P app is NOT SUFFICIENT for voter identification at the polling stations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Situations where identity or age verification with a photo ID might be required:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you are buying <strong>liquor or tobacco products<\/strong>, your passport can verify your age (above 18).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are buying a monthly pass for <strong>public transport<\/strong> in Budapest, the pass is not transferable, and as such, it requires some kind of ID number. This can be either your passport or your residence permit if you don\u2019t have a European ID card or driver\u2019s license card.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are a student and want to take advantage of a <strong>student discount<\/strong>, you will need to present a student ID. Please note: many sellers accept only Hungarian student IDs. An international student ID may be accepted at the discretion of the seller.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If there is a <strong>discount for local residents<\/strong> at a gym in your neighborhood, you might be asked to present both a photo ID and verification of your local address.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Photos used for a photo ID<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Photos used on Hungarian ID cards, driver\u2019s licenses, and passports are usually <strong>taken at the government office<\/strong> when you submit your application. If you are taking care of the application <strong>remotely in a video call<\/strong>, your photo can be taken by the administrator during the call, but only if you have appropriate lighting and background where you are making the call from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes you might be asked to <strong>submit a photo<\/strong> with your application for a photo ID. In this case, you will need a <strong>passport photo (\u201cigazolv\u00e1nyk\u00e9p\u201d)<\/strong>. You are normally required to submit a recent photo, which means no older than 3 months. The date of a photo is rarely checked, however; if you still look the same as on a slightly older photo, it will be acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you have your passport photo taken, you should keep in mind the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Standard size: 4.5 cm x 3.5 cm<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Portrait from the <strong>shoulders up<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Color<\/strong> photo if possible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In front of homogenous, <strong>light background<\/strong> (preferably white)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Face the camera directly<\/strong> (no half profile)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wear a neutral facial expression<\/strong> (you are not expected to smile; on the contrary, a slight smile is allowed, but do not show teeth)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do not wear black or white clothes<\/strong> (too dark or too bright clothing may interfere with how the black and white picture in your document turns out)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not wear heavy <strong>makeup<\/strong> (light makeup is allowed but only if it does not alter your features or hide your identifying features such as your moles or scars)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your <strong>hair<\/strong> should not cover your eyebrows and preferably your ears<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not wear any <strong>accessories<\/strong> that alter or hide your features, e.g. glasses, hat, mask, or big earrings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need a passport photo for a photo ID, you have various options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Find a professional photography studio that also takes passport photos<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are automatic passport photo booths around town (usually around busy transport hubs)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can take a photo at home and print it at a copy shop or a self-service station (sometimes available at drug stores)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Navigate Hungarian bureaucracy with Helpers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The mission of Helpers Hungary is to help international clients navigate Hungarian bureaucracy.
