As a result, depending on which day of the week bank holidays are, the previous or the following day is granted a rest day by the government to make a long weekend for everyone. In that case, a&nbsp;<strong>Saturday is declared a work day<\/strong>&nbsp;instead, to keep the number of work days over the year the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Working Saturdays in Hungary in 2018<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>10 March <\/strong>(for the long weekend 15 \u2013 18 March)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>21 April <\/strong>(for the long weekend of Labor Day 28 April \u2013 1 May)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>13 October<\/strong> (for the long weekend of 20 \u2013 23 October)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>10 November <\/strong>(for the long weekend of 1 \u2013 4 November)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1 December <\/strong>(for a long Christmas holiday of 22 \u2013 26 December)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>15 December <\/strong>(for the long weekend celebrating New Year 29 December \u2013 1 January)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Special days which are not bank holidays<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note: while only the above listed are bank holidays in Hungary, you should keep in mind that around the end of the year there are two&nbsp;<strong>\u201cshort\u201d days, when most employees are allowed to leave early<\/strong>, shops close around noon, and even public transport switches to night mode around 4 p.m. These are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>24 December<\/strong>&nbsp;(Monday): Christmas Eve<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>31 December<\/strong>&nbsp;(Monday): New Year\u2019s Eve<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As these are&nbsp;<strong>both rest days in 2018<\/strong>, you do not have to worry about them if your employees work on a regular work schedule (Monday through Friday).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Business on bank holidays in Hungary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you employ workers in Hungary, keep in mind that&nbsp;regularly <strong>your employees are not going to work on bank holidays<\/strong>. Of course, you might still need them to work on these days \u2013 maybe because you are in a business that gives continuous service, like a restaurant. In that case,&nbsp;<strong>you will have to pay your employees increased wages<\/strong>&nbsp;(see our article on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/helpers.hu\/hu\/human-eroforras-es-toborzas\/need-pay-overtime-employees\/\">overtime payment<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Business on exchanged Saturdays in Hungary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Working Saturdays count as full work days<\/strong>. Regarding work schedules, public transportation timetables and shop opening hours, <strong>they are considered \u201cFridays\u201d<\/strong> (while the calendar Friday the day before is considered a \u201cThursday\u201d). So if your \u201c9 to 5\u201d employees usually leave early (e.g. around 2 p.m.) on the last weekdays, i.e. on regular Fridays, they will stay full time on this calendar Friday, and leave early on the working Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On working Saturdays, most employers are more lenient with employees. At many companies, working home office is encouraged, or <strong>work-related, but non-working events<\/strong> are organized, such as a competence training or a team-building activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, the <strong>employer may decide to waive<\/strong> their right to have employees working on these days. Alternatively, employers may also take these Saturdays as holidays, as if these were regular work days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seems complicated? Talk to your accountant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When in doubt, you can always&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:finance@helpers.hu\">consult your accountant or payroll advisor<\/a>, who calculates the payrolls for you and your employees, and keeps tab on holidays, rest days, and working Saturdays.
