Henley & Partners are one of the world’s most prominent providers of investment based residency and citizenship solutions. They maintain an excellent online database listing all the countries each passport gives visa-free access to, and in their quarterly brochure, they publish a ranking of 200 countries around the globe. Both tools are easily accessible and give readers insight into global trends.
In the latest issue of Q1 2024, Hungary ranks 7th with visa-free access to 188 countries. This is an improvement of two positions and three countries compared to last year. The number at the front of each line indicates the number of countries the passport-holders of each country can enter without a visa.

Since Hungary is a member state of the European Union, not only can Hungarian passport holders freely enter any member state, they can also live and work wherever they want in the EU.
Only Hungarian citizens can qualify for a Hungarian passport. Currently, there is no fast-track citizenship program available in Hungary (although there is a golden visa program). Foreign nationals can gain Hungarian citizenship if they live in Hungary for a prolonged time. The standard is 8 years holding a Hungarian address card, but that can be shortened if the applicant has a spouse and children in Hungary.
The shortest route to Hungarian citizenship is if you have Hungarian ancestors. If your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, or other ancestors were Hungarian, you can gain citizenship in about a year based on your connection to them.
