If you want to apply for Hungarian citizenship, you need to check several things before you can start the citizenship procedure. These include checking the regulations in your country of origin as well as meeting some conditions that make you eligible for Hungarian citizenship.
First and foremost we recommend checking whether the legal system of your home country allows dual citizenship or multiple citizenship. Some countries do not allow their citizens to be at the same time citizens of other countries. As you might not want to risk losing citizenship of the country where you were born and raised, find out if you are allowed to have dual citizenship. Hungary recognizes multiple citizenship, so you only have to check the laws of your country of origin.
You should know that the regular citizenship procedure is quite lengthy. Normally you must have been living in Hungary for a while, namely 11 years altogether. When you decide that you actually wish to apply for Hungarian citizenship, you must meet some further conditions. You must have a confident command of the Hungarian language, and also know the basics about Hungarian history, literature, culture, and the legal system. You will be required to take an exam to prove all the above.
Of course there is! Besides the regular citizenship procedure described above, the Hungarian Citizenship Act determines several ways how you can become a Hungarian citizen. These usually involve some kind of family ties in Hungary. These processes are generally referred to as naturalization.
