Community Budget in Budapest

Urban development is mostly planned, debated, and decided by the local government of Budapest. The Community Budget project was created to get the public more involved in these processes by letting people vote on projects they want to see implemented the most. Since 2020, the local government organizes this much like a contest, and this year HUF 1 billion (ca. EUR 2.5 million) will be distributed among the winners.

You can cast your vote at https://otlet.budapest.hu after registration (you only need to provide an email address and your postal code) until September 30, 2025. The website is written in Hungarian, but an automatic English translation is available if you click the language switcher in the top right corner. The translation is not perfect (some place names are translated as if they were common nouns), but it is functional. Additionally, you can also cast your vote at any branch office of the Metropolitan Library network (Fővárosi Szabó Ervin Könytár).

When you register, you can also enter a prize draw and win interesting prizes, such as tickets to theaters, museums, or spas.

Who can vote?

Anyone can vote on the Community Budget who lives, works, or studies in Budapest. You do not need an address card or any special document to prove this; just indicate your Budapest postal code when you register.

Community Budget categories

There are 5 project categories in the Community Budget project. You have 15 votes altogether, and you can cast 3 votes in each category. The plans that get the most votes will be realized by the local government.

The 5 project categories are as follows:

• Local ideas: Ideas tied to specific locations, where the cost of implementation is below HUF 50 million (ca. EUR 120,000).
• Local big ideas: Ideas tied to specific locations, where the cost of implementation is between HUF 51 and 120 million (ca. EUR 120,000 – 300,000).
• Creating opportunities: Ideas that aim at reducing social differences by supporting disadvantaged people and communities.
• Open Budapest: Ideas promoting community, art, and culture.
• Green Budapest: Ideas that combat climate change with environmentally friendly solutions to make Budapest greener.

The eligible ideas show a wide variety, ranging from setting up new bicycle racks or pedestrian crossings through creating new community spaces to establishing community gardens.

In each category, you can see a map view and a list view of ideas so you can simply browse or find ideas near you. If you click on an idea, you will see a more detailed description. There are some ideas which, if they win, will not be implemented by the local government but by a third party. If that is the case, it will be indicated here.
