Since the creation of the European Union and the Schengen zone, many think the EU is in fact the United States of Europe, similar to the USA. While the EU is indeed an alliance of countries with a level of central legislation, it can definitely NOT be considered as one country. This means there is no such thing as an EU citizenship, so one cannot get an actual document with “EU passport” written on it – as opposed to a USA passport, which is a real object you can put in your pocket.
The so called “EU citizenship” in fact means citizenship of any of the member states of the EU. British citizenship means EU citizenship just as much as German citizenship or Bulgarian citizenship – or Hungarian citizenship, for that matter. It is also good to know there is absolutely no difference between the citizenships of the different member states. If you are a citizen of any member state of the EU, you are an EU citizen, and that’s it.
It is also important to know that not any European citizenship qualifies as EU citizenship, because Europe – in a geographical sense – is largely different from the EU. There are several European countries which are not EU member states, like Ukraine, Russia, Belorussia, Moldova or Bosnia–Herzegovina.
If you want to become an EU citizen, the only thing you have to do is to gain citizenship in any of the member states of the EU, for instance Hungary.
